Do you know the ABCS for Safe Infant Sleep?

On average, almost 20 Idaho babies die in their sleep each year due to accidental suffocation, overheating, strangulation or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).  While twenty might not seem like a lot, Idaho ranks 30% higher than the national average for sudden infant deaths. Following the ABCS of Safe Infant Sleep will help keep your sleeping baby safe.

SIDS is defined as the sudden, unexplained death of an infant younger than 1 year of age that remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation. This includes a complete autopsy, a full examination of the death scene, and a review of the infant’s and family health history.

The exact cause of SIDS remains unknown—in fact, researchers suspect multiple conditions may lead to SIDS—but we do know many ways to reduce a baby’s risk.

The ABCS of Safe Infant Sleep:

  • A – Babies sleep ALONE
  • B – On their BACKS with no blankets or bedding
  • C – In a CRIB and cool (70 degrees)
  • S – In a SMOKE-FREE environment

  • Do put babies to sleep alone, on their backs, in a crib with a tight-fitting bottom sheet.
  • Do keep babies away from second hand smoke.
  • Dress baby lightly and control the room temperature. 70 degrees is ideal.
  • Do breastfeed and use pacifiers.

  • Don’t put a baby to sleep with blankets, pillows, stuffed animals or bumper pads
  • Don’t ever sleep with an infant!
  • Don’t put a baby to sleep on chairs, sofas, futons, beanbags or cushions.
  • Don’t put babies to sleep on soft mattresses such as pillow-tops, waterbeds, or memory foam. If the baby leaves an impression in the mattress, it’s too soft.
  • Don’t expose babies to secondhand smoke.
